The Australian beef industry has released its 2025 Annual Update under the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework (ABSF), presenting a strong signal that sustainability is central to the sector’s future.
Some key achievements that stand out: since 2005, the industry has reduced net CO₂ emissions by over 70 %, largely driven by increased carbon storage on grazing lands, and an all-time high beef production volume was achieved while simultaneously reducing solid waste to landfill by more than 70 % in processing.
Challenges that have been noted include new mandatory climate-related financial disclosure rules, which will expand supply-chain reporting requirements (including Scope 3 emissions); workforce shortages and rising cost pressures remain; and the patchwork of global sustainability standards.
The AASF is continuing to work closely with the ABSF to align approaches and ensure Australia’s national frameworks are consistent with these evolving global sustainability standards. This collaboration supports a shared language and data foundation across commodities, helping the beef industry — and Australian agriculture more broadly — demonstrate compliance and credibility in international markets.
