Australia’s wool industry marked a major milestone with the launch of the Australian Wool Sustainability Scheme (AWSS) at the International Wool Textile Organisation Congress in Adelaide. Developed to replace and modernise previous assurance systems, the AWSS provides a comprehensive framework for demonstrating sustainability performance across the wool supply chain. The scheme establishes robust standards for animal welfare, land management, biodiversity protection, and fibre traceability; giving producers, processors, and global buyers confidence in the environmental and ethical credentials of Australian wool.
The AWSS aligns with international best practice and responds to growing global demand for transparent and verifiable sustainability claims. It simplifies certification pathways and strengthens data reporting, helping position Australian wool as a preferred natural fibre in a market increasingly focused on sustainability and circularity.
